Marilyn Monroe-themed pub replacing Crystals

Wednesday, November 30, 2011 10:27 PM EST By Diane Church Staff Writer BRISTOL Diane Baral has long been a fan of Marilyn Monroe. So it was only fitting that when Baral decided to open a restaurant and bar, the lifelong Bristol resident would name it after the iconic star. That restaurant, Marilyns Pub, is set to open early next year at 388 Broad St., the former site of Crystals Pub and Grub. Although Baral hasnt added on to the building, it has undergone an extreme makeover. It looks bigger because of eaves on the front and windows near the roof. The pub is now a tan color with stone trim. Parking spaces in front of the building have been removed and flowers will be planted. The patio on one side has been revamped. About all that remains of the old Crystals is a purple door in the front, which will soon be replaced, Baral said. I wanted to do something different, she said. This is for the over 30 crowd. Its a restaurant and a bar. It will have a pub menu, a lunch menu and a dinner ex...

Kennedy has been remembered as both provocative and sensuous. However, actress Joan Copeland has recently offered a new explanation that clarifies why Monroe appeared so breathless at the 1962 performance. The DailyMail reports that actress Joan Copeland, now 89 years old and Monroes former sister-in-law, shared her memories from the night of the performance. Copeland, who was in attendance that evening, said that Monroe did not perform breathlessly in hopes of appearing sensual on purpose, but ! rather t hat she was actually out of breath from getting lost back stage and was running around trying to find a door, even causing her to miss her cue. Michelle Williams' 'Marilyn Monroe' shows her glamorous side

NEW YORK The connection between Michelle Williams acting and her personal life is so strong that even she gets the two confused sometimes. Making last years Blue Valentine, which painfully and intimately depicted the collapse of a young marriage, occasionally seems so intense of a memory to Williams as to be a true one. When I look back on my life and I sort of reflect on relationships or anything, my mind folds that one into the mix of the real relationships that Ive had in my life, says the actress. And I have to stop myself and say, Oh, no, you did not marry and divorce Ryan Gosling. While delusions of wedding Ryan Gosling are not necessarily uncommon to moviegoers, for Williams they exemplify the intensely introspective approach she takes to her work. Going by her latest film, My Week With Marilyn, it is clear Williams has undergone a shift. After years of predominantly raw, naturalistic films like Wendy and Lucy and Blue Valentine, in My Week With Marilyn, shes glamorous and rad...

Harvey Weinstein: How Marilyn Monroe Got Her Groove, and How Dad Became Cool

The council of foreign relations is the nickname we have given the weekly meeting between my three very hip, very cool daughters and their very unhip, uncool dad. Once a week, school or business is torpedoed and we meet in a restaurant (I have a fourth daughter, but at 14 months she would destroy any restaurant because she has more destructive moves than Jackie Chan and is way faster). About a year ago, my mother, their grandmother, the infamous Miriam Weinstein, decided to drop by. Miriam of course, is the one we named Miramax after. By the way, when Disney kept the name Miramax, I always thought my mom was going to take on Michael Eisner. To her threats, Bob and I always said "you can't do that" and she said, "yes I can, I'm right and he's wrong, and that name is synonymous with a certain kind of filmmaking. And your father. And besides, if they take me into custody, I'll get off". Bob and I replied, "how would you get off?" "Because...

Marilyn Monroe had mystique in pre-internet age, says Kenneth Branagh

London, Nov 27 : Kenneth Branagh, who is in a new movie about Marilyn Monroe, has revealed that the late actress had mystique in a pre-internet age where the power of the movies gave her an extra special allure. The 50-year-old actor, who plays Sir Lawrence Oliver in 'My Week With Marilyn', also said that the actress was an exotic sex symbol who was far more famous in her day than any current stars. "Someone like Marilyn on the movie screen was as far away and exotic as you could be. When she arrived at Heathrow in 1956 the traffic stopped because Marilyn arrived," Sky News quoted him as saying. "Not only did she come from Hollywood but she brought sex. Britain was being taken out of its post-war austerity and Marilyn was a symbol of this new freedom," he added.

Michelle Williams Discusses Role of Marilyn Monroe

Michelle Williams discusses playing the part of Marilyn Monroe, one of the most famous sex symbols in Hollywood, in "My Week with Marilyn." In an interview given by The Weinstein Company, Williams explained how she portrayed the character. "Because so many people have so many ideas about who Marilyn Monroe was and after a certain point in your research, you have to filter all the noise out and you have to pin something down and go, 'Okay, this is my Marilyn. This is the way I see her. This is the way I interpret her.' And I hope I do it justice," Williams said, KABC-TV reports. Taking place during the summer of 1956 in the United Kingdom, "My Week with Marilyn" shows the week that Colin Clark, British writer, was Monroe's assistant while she was working on "The Prince and the Showgirl." The character of Clark is played by Eddie Redmayne. The actress discusses the personal connection she felt towards Monroe. "My primary associati...

Movie review: Michelle Williams makes a marvelous Marilyn Monroe

My Week With Marilyn (B+) Doubters of Michelle Williams acting talent will be silenced after they watch her Oscar-worthy performance as Marilyn Monroe in My Week With Marilyn. Silenced as in, Super Glue on the lips. If the Oscar folks dont nominate Williams for an Academy Award, they quite simply are idiots. You can seee the trailer here . Williams not only looks like Monroe, talks like Monroe and sings like Monroe, she is Monroe. She inhabits all of Monroes vulnerability, all her insecurity and all her sex appeal. She doesnt just get under Monroes alabaster skin, she finds her conflicted soul. We see an actress flaunting her sexuality yet wanting to be appreciated as a serious actress. In one of the films telling scenes, a James Joyce novel is at her bedside. Anyone wondering why Monroe became such a legendary -- and analyzed -- figure needs to only see this film. In the high-maintenance department, she makes todays divas look like bag ladies. And her troubled family background gives...

Michelle Williams had a lot of pressure on her shoulders, portraying one of Hollywood's most legendary sex symbols in "My Week with Marilyn," but thankfully the actress didn't realize that fact until after she had finished filming the movie. Breathlessness behind Marilyn Monroe's most memorable performance

London, Nov 25 : The reason why Marilyn Monroes rendition of Happy Birthday Mr President for John F Kennedy sounded so sexy and provocative was simply because she was out of breath. The film icon apparently got lost while heading towards the stage at Madison Square Garden in New York in 1962 and as she ran around trying to find the right door she ran out of breath, the Daily Mail reported. Monroe was unable to sing properly because she got to the stage so late, but her version of Happy Birthday came across as rather more sensual than she may have intended, earning it an unintended place in history It became the late actress most memorable moment and is among the most famous and suggestive songs ever sung in public. The interest in the actress has been reinvigorated by the film My week with Marilyn, starring Michelle Williams, but the surprising disclosure was made by American actress Joan Copeland, 89, who was there on the night. Copeland, the younger sister of playwright Arthur Miller...

Michelle Williams captures essence of Marilyn Monroe in well-acted 'My Week With Marilyn'

Michelle Williams captures essence of Marilyn Monroe in well-acted 'My Week With Marilyn' LAURENCE CENDROWICZ Dougray Scott portrays Arthur Miller, third husband of Marilyn Monroe, played by Michelle Williams in "My Week With Marilyn." Editor's note: "My Week With Marilyn" was not previewed for Pittsburgh critics. Michelle Williams doesn't so much impersonate Marilyn Monroe as suggest her in the entertaining new bio-drama "My Week With Marilyn." She doesn't have Monroe's overripe figure, Kewpie doll cheeks or "C'mere and kiss me" lips. There's va-va without the voom. But in scene after scene, Ms. Williams "gets" Monroe -- the sex appeal, the vulnerability, the sense of fear of discovery behind all that out-there sexual bravado. When she's singing about starting a "Heat Wave" by "making my seat wave" -- friends, you will believe it. "My Week" is based on a memoir by Colin ...

Michelle Williams: I became Marilyn Monroe

Michelle Williams was in character while portraying Marilyn Monroe at all times. The 31-year-old actress personates the Hollywood icon in newly released biographical drama My Week with Marilyn. The film directed by Simon Curtis chronicles the time Marilyn spent being escorted around Britain by young aspiring filmmaker Colin Clark in 1956 shortly after the star wed famed playwright Arthur Miller. Michelle channeled Marilyns character unremittingly while filming. I tried to keep her voice, I tried to keep her walk, and I tried to keep as much close by as I could at all times, Michelle told Fox News at the films Los Angeles premiere. Michelle feels honoured to have had the opportunity to play such a cinematic paragon. [People think] that maybe she wasnt as bright as she actually was, she explained. I just feel so lucky I never thought I would wind up here, playing Marilyn. Director Simon is grateful for Michelles powerful commitment to the role. [Michelles] a great actress playing a grea...

Michelle Williams transforms into Marilyn Monroe

Image
LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Michelle Williams transformed herself into the iconic Marilyn Monroe for the new movie, "My Week with Marilyn." There's a lot of buzz surrounding her performance as one of the greatest sex symbols Hollywood has ever known. The movie is based on the true story of a young man who worked for Sir Laurence Olivier and documented what he witnessed during production of the 1957 film, "The Prince and the Showgirl." Playing one of the world's most recognizable women was no easy task- even for a two-time Oscar nominee. "Luckily I didn't realize how big of a risk it was until after the movie was made because it pleased me," said Williams. "It thrilled me and excited me to challenge myself in this way. I didn't think of it as a professional risk. I thought of it as a personal risk. And those, I'm always willing to take." Kenneth Branagh plays Olivier in the film, And Julia Ormond plays his wife, actress Vivien Leigh...

Michelle Williams Didn't Always Feel "Sexy" Playing Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn Monroe can without a doubt be considered one of Hollywood's sex symbols, but Michelle Williams claims portraying the sultry late star doesn't seem to have long-lasting effects. PHOTOS: Stars who've channeled their inner Marilyn Monroe On Monday's Piers Morgan Tonight , the host asked the actress, who stars in My Week with Marilyn , if the role has made her feel totally sexy. PHOTOS: Us Weekly's fall movie preview "Honestly, no. When all that comes off -- the hair, the wig, the costume -- there's a strange in-between person underneath," she explained. "You know, maybe in those moments like in the bathtub or at the scene with the school boys, but not in everyday life." PHOTOS: 10 classic beauty looks As a young Monroe, the 31-year-old star had to squeeze her curves into very, very tight clothes -- and the result, according to costar Kenneth Branagh , was otherworldly. Playing Marilyn Monroe a new kind of challenge for Michelle Williams

NEW YORK Any sane actress would be apprehensive about playing Marilyn Monroe, as Michelle Williams does in My Week With Marilyn . The icons shoes are awfully hard to step into and filling other garments is even more intimidating. I miss those hips, Williams admits wistfully, referring to the padding that convincingly gave the waifish actress Monroes famous curves. She first tried gaining weight for the part, De Niro-style, but found the pounds went more to her face than her hips. It took low-tech movie magic, not Method acting, to fill out those glittering evening gowns. Sitting in a suite at the Waldorf-Astoria, a cloud of Old Hollywood glamour lingers around the actress, even if, wearing a simple dress and boyish haircut , she herself has returned to Earth. (How old-school is the Waldorf? On the 39th floor, the windows still open.) Hotel staffers have left a photo for her, of Monroe at a 1957 gala in a Waldorf ballroom its one more reminder that, unlike previous roles she was able...
