Marilyn Monroe inspires new Macy's collection that puts a modern twist on the legendary star's Fifties style

Marilyn Monroe is the inspiration for an upcoming juniors' collection at Macy's.

The budget-friendly line, which hits stores and the retailer's website in mid-March, will feature high-waisted trousers, gingham details and pink polka dot denim that channel the Fifties screen siren's timeless style.

And while the collection's short shorts and cropped tops were not likely fashion items during the star's below-the-knee era, the retailer explains that the line is intended to put a modern twist on her style.

A press release states: '[The collection] reimagines the style of the greatest icon of the 20th century for the 21st-century fashionista.'

In two photos from the campaign, models pose in platinum blonde wigs and clothes from the collection alongside iconic images of the legendary actress.

One look includes a short w! hite sundress adorned with red cherries, while another features denim cut-offs worn with a button-down shirt tied at the waist.

Celebrity collaborations with retailers are par for the course in the fashion world, but Marilyn Monroe, who passed away more than 50 years ago, is a unique choice for the retailer.

Nick Woodhouse, president of Authentic Brands - which acquired the Monroe estate two years ago - explained why his company and Macy's are 'collaborating' with the starlet: 'Many celebrities of today, and I say that with air quotes, are one D.U.I. away from a disaster,' he said.

He continued: 'With Marilyn, all of her dirty laundry has already been aired.'

The line, which is aimed at girls aged 13-30, will be available this spring.
