Marilyn Monroe Uncensored FBI Files Released

Newly-released uncensored FBI files on Marilyn Monroe reveal the names of suspected communist friends, who drew concern from government officials and her own entourage. But the documents, which previously were heavily redacted, do not contain any new information about the film star's death 50 years ago. The files were obtained by The Associated Press through the Freedom of Information Act. They show the extent to which US spies monitored Monroe between 1955 and August 1962 when she died. But the FBI never found any proof she was a member of the Communist Party. One entry, which previously had been almost completely redacted, concerned intelligence that she and other entertainers sought visas to visit Russia. They also reveal that some in the star's inner circle were concerned about her association with Frederick Vanderbilt Field, who was disinherited from his wealthy family over his leftist views. A trip to Mexico in 1962 to shop for furniture brought her in contact with Mr Fie...

FBI removes many redactions in Marilyn Monroe file

LOS ANGELES (AP) FBI files on Marilyn Monroe that could not be located earlier this year have been found and re-issued, revealing the names of some of the movie star's communist-leaning friends who drew concern from government officials and her own entourage. But the records, which previously had been heavily redacted, do not contain any new information about Monroe's death 50 years ago. Letters and news clippings included in the files show the bureau was aware of theories the actress had been killed, but they do not show that any effort was undertaken to investigate the claims. Los Angeles authorities concluded Monroe's death was a probable suicide. Recently obtained by The Associated Press through the Freedom of Information Act, the updated FBI files do show the extent the agency was monitoring Monroe for ties to communism in the years before her death in August 1962. The records reveal that some in Monroe's inner circle were concerned about her association with Fr...

FBI files on Marilyn Monroe that could not be located earlier this year have been found and re-issued. The files had previously been heavily edited, but more details are now public. The files show the extent to which the agency was monitoring the actress for ties to communism in the years before her death in August 1962. They reveal that some in Monroe's inner circle were concerned about her association with Frederick Vanderbilt Field, who was disinherited from his wealthy family over his leftist views. A trip to Mexico in 1962 to shop for furniture brought her in contact with Field, who was living in the country with his wife in self-imposed exile. Informants reported to the FBI that a 'mutual infatuation' had developed between Field and Monroe, which caused concern among some in her inner circle, includi...

FBI removes many redactions in Marilyn Monroe file

LOS ANGELES (AP) The FBI has re-issued files it kept on Marilyn Monroe , removing dozens of redactions from entries related to surveillance of the actress for communist ties. A large section of the files obtained by The Associated Press focuses on Monroe's 1962 trip to Mexico and her emerging friendship with Frederick Vanderbilt Field , who was disinherited from his wealthy family for leftist views. Field was Monroe's guide on a trip in which she furniture-shopped for her new home. The AP appealed the redactions in the file as part of a series of stories on the 50th anniversary of Monroe's death in 1962, but the bureau previously said it no longer had access to the files. The bureau issued a new version after a request for details on the records' locations.

Muralist touching up Fresno's Marilyn Monroe

Muralist FranCisco Vargas was busy Thursday working to finish a "facelift" of a Marilyn Monroe mural on the Weco Welding Supplies building on Ventura Avenue between Seventh and Eighth streets in southeast Fresno. The original Marilyn mural that Vargas painted 20 years ago had begun fading and peeling, so Vargas was asked to spruce it up. Vargas, 61, who has traveled the state and the country painting signs and murals for about 35 years, completely changed the Marilyn image, giving her a monochromatic color scheme and a paint brush in place of her iconic cigarette. It's also bigger -- 11 feet by 15 feet instead of the former 8-by-12. The mural on the east side of the Weco building is visible to sharp-eyed westbound motorists but is shielded by a barbed-wire and chain-link fence.

Abe Lincoln Leads to Healthy Eating, Marilyn Monroe to Sinful Snacking

Image
Mmm, salad.Photo: Library of Congress Researchers at Northern Kentucky University have decided that sex doesn't sell healthy eating. Instead, symbols of platonic commitment, like Abraham Lincoln, motivate consumers to choose wholesome snacks. They conducted this incredibly scientific study by showing under 100 college students photos of Lincoln and Monroe, followed by a menu of snack choices. Sixty percent of kids who saw a photo of Lincoln chose a healthy snack afterward, but less than 30 percent of kids who saw Monroe did the same they opted for candy. But isn't it possible that these Southern young'uns were turned on by Abe? They could have gotten confused and thought he was Daniel Day-Lewis. Or a sexy vampire hunter. Or a hot bearded hipster from Williamsburg. Just sayin'. [ Live Science via The Daily Meal ] Share this story... Facebook Digg ShareThis Counter Email Print

Evan Agostini/Invision NEW YORK Marilyn Monroe. The Rolling Stones. And Bond James Bond. What do they have in common? Sure, one's long gone, and one's fictional. Turns out some things never go out of style. Hal Schaefer, jazz piano virtuoso and onetime love of Marilyn Monroe, dies

Image
In the early 1950s, the virtuosic jazz pianist Hal Schaefer was working behind the scenes at the 20th Century Fox studio in Hollywood as a musician, musical arranger and vocal coach. He tutored many film stars in the finer points of singing, but none more glamorous than Marilyn Monroe. The two became lovers, which is how the little-known Mr. Schaefer became embroiled in a Hollywood scandal involving three of the biggest celebrities of the time: Monroe, Joe DiMaggio and Frank Sinatra. (International News) - Hal Schaefer was a voice coach for celebrities including Marilyn Monroe, and he later became her lover. Mr. Schaefer, who was 87 when he died Dec. 8 at his home in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., worked with musical greats as a young man. He performed in nightclubs alongside Duke Ellington, who once introduced Mr. Schaefer by saying, And now youre going to hear a real piano player. In his teens, Mr. Schaefer held the piano chair in groups led by trumpeter Harry James, saxophonist Benny Carter...

Hal Schaefer dies at 87; musician known for Marilyn Monroe liaison

"The Real Reason for Marilyn Monroe 's Divorce from Joe DiMaggio " read the headline on a 1955 Confidential magazine article that exposed a bumbling ambush involving the famous ballplayer and Frank Sinatra . The unlikely duo allegedly had tried to catch the actress with "another man" at an apartment in West Hollywood. Except the headline wasn't exactly true. The sex symbol and DiMaggio had been divorced for more than a week when acting on a tip from a private investigator a group of men broke down the door of an apartment on Nov. 5, 1954, only to be greeted by a middle-aged woman screaming in her bed. DiMaggio and Sinatra were reportedly spotted scurrying away from the scene. Nearby, Monroe was escaping through the back door of another apartment with her paramour and vocal coach, Hal Schaefer, who said decades later: "I think I'd be dead today if they had found me in there with Marilyn. They came in there and started destroying things. I mean, the...

Hal Schaefer, Marilyn Monroes vocal coach, dies in Fort Lauderdale

Hal Schaefer, Fort Lauderdale jazz pianist, vocal coach and arranger, launched his career with Benny Carter, played with Harry James, Billy Eckstine and Ella Fitzgerald, opened shows for Duke Ellington, and coached Judy Garland. But he became best known in Hollywood for a brief, dangerous liaison with the sexiest movie star of the 1950s: Marilyn Monroe. It happened after she split with baseball great Joe DiMaggio, he told The Miami Herald in 2001. Schaefer had been coaching Monroe, whod come to him through Jack Cole, the Gentlemen Prefer Blondes choreographer. He never thought of Monroe as a sex goddess, he said, but she was insecure and needy, and he succumbed. DiMaggio, he said, was insanely jealous, and was determined to catch his wife in the act. On Nov. 5, 1954, as he dined with buddy Frank Sinatra, The Yankee Clipper heard that Marilyn and another man could be found at an apartment in West Hollywood. The two men, with others, broke down the door of the ostensible love nest, terri...

Van Nuys activists want new post office named for Marilyn Monroe

She's carried the name sex symbol, bombshell and Hollywood legend since her death 50 years ago. Now, a local neighborhood council hopes Marilyn Monroe's name will also be stamped on a federal building. A proposal to name a San Fernando Valley post office after Monroe was expected to be discussed Wednesday night at the Van Nuys Neighborhood Council meeting. Council President George Thomas said Monroe's link to Van Nuys is an important one, because the actress said living in the area was the happiest time of her life. "Marilyn Monroe is an American icon, and renaming the post office after her is going to be a part of our ongoing efforts to bring light to the history of Van Nuys," Thomas said in a statement. "Our community has a rich heritage of which many Valley-ites are unaware." Monroe attended Van Nuys High School in the 1940s. She was living with an aunt after an unstable childhood spent in foster homes and as a ward of the state. Thomas said Van Nuys ...

Marilyn Monroe back in Palm Springs, looking bigger, better than ever

Image
Palm Springs has a new eye-catching statue, Marilyn Monroe at the intersection of Palm Canyon Drive and Tahquitz Canyon Way, the center of downtown. Terry Richard/The Oregonian Ooh la la! Marilyn is in town. Yes, that Marilyn _ Marilyn Monroe. The blonde bombshell of half a century ago is hanging out again in Palm Springs. She landed in town in May and disappears next June, so don't delay if you want to see her. She's looking gorgeous, all 26 feet of her, at the intersection of Tahquitz Canyon and Palm Canyton drives, the so-called Main and Main of California's glamorous desert city. The glamor of the city, of course, has changed over the years. The bars full of guys a couple blocks away likely cast Marilyn no glance, but that's not me. I still find her gorgeous, even as an aluminum and stainless steel statue. I remember, sort of, the news on the day she died, 50 years ago last August. I remember my parents noting it to us kids after hearing it on the radio. Monroe...

Adam Braver's fictionalized Marilyn Monroe

"Misfit" is a fictionalized version of the life of Marilyn Monroe that ultimately leads up to the mysteries around her death. Author Adam Braver was no expert on Monroe when he started writing the novel. But once he started diving into the research, his intrigue propelled him forward. "It was one of the hardest books that I have written. The story is so complex," Braver says from his office at Roger Williams University in Rhode Island, where he is an associate professor and writer in residence. "What interested me was she was this character, and who is the real person underneath all of these characters she created. But also how she kept reinventing herself was very fascinating. Then she reinvented herself into something that was no longer owned by her." He found his general "Wikipedia knowledge" of Marilyn Monroe to be to his advantage when he started the book. "I didn't have a sense of protecting her, and during the process I found m...
