Canada's 'Marilyn Monroe' towers

Image
Beijing architect Ma Yansong designed the Absolute Towers that have enlivened the city of Mississauga in Canada. A continual balcony spirals up the building's sinuous exterior, and every floor is different. The "Marilyn Monroe" nickname surprised Ma. "My wish was to make a building against modern towers ... I thought I should do something not so powerful ... more natural and irregular. In China, maybe they'd refer the building to some beautiful vase. People link this building to something artistic or human." Ma has also proposed a plan for ! Beijing 2050, which involves returning Tiananmen Square to forest. "Planting that many trees, that is not difficult for China," he says. "What takes time is how people change their minds. If that space changes into something green and human, that means big changes in China." "When people look at the proposal they always say that's beautiful -- even the government. Nobody will say no to tree...

The Secret To Marilyn Monroe's Timeless Brand

Marilyn Monroe made 29 films, 24 in the first 8 years of her career. Norma Jeane wasan American actress, amodel, asinger, and a timelesssex symboltobecome one of Hollywoods most enduring silver screen legends. Scratching beneath the surface, what if a brand was able to isolate the secret to Marilyns Marilyn unfading star? What if there were a specific quality that resulted in a brand rising above the noise while others simply withered away? Al Ries got it right in his milestone book on the 22 immutable laws of branding when he observed the narrower a brand, the more it won and gained traction. The wider it went, the more diluted and less it stuck. As Ries wrote, "You can't expand your way to success. You can only narrow your way to success and then hope you don't spoil that success by overexpanding the brand." In the case of Marilyn, she knew her sweet spot and she shined in that very specified place where she could shine. Her choices aligned to the Marilyn mystique a...

Britney Spears like Marilyn Monroe

Britney Spears has been compared to Marilyn Monroe by her 'X Factor' co-judge L.A. Reid. The reaction fans give when they see the pop singer has stunned her fellow 'X Factor' judge L.A. Reid, who claims his co-star has the same mystique as the late icon. He said: 'People go crazy for Beyonce Knowles and Jay-Z. I've seen them go crazy for Rihanna. But this? Britney has the same magic that made Marilyn Monroe famous, that intangible ability to be completely loved and for people to be completely consumed by her everything.' However, Britney insists the idea of being an icon 'freaks' her out. She explained to America's Elle magazine: 'I try not to think about that. It's just - that's an overwhelming thing to think about. And I still feel new and fresh at the whole game. And when people say they know me, it still freaks me out. Still. To this day.' 'X Factor' boss Simon Cowell, who recruited Britney to the show, revealed he was...
