TIFF Day 7: Marilyn Monroe doc, 'Smashed,' 'A Royal Affair' premiere

Stars walked the red carpet for the screening of Smashed, a film about an alcoholic Grade One teachers struggle to get sober, at the Toronto International Film Festival on Wednesday.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Octavia Spencer were among the stars at the Ryerson Theatre.

"I wanted to do a movie that was socially relevant and that would have an impact," Oscar-award winner Spencer told CityNews.

"The fact that Winstead and Aaron Paul were already signed on, I thought, 'yeah, sign me up.'"

Later, actors Mads Mikkelsen and Alicia Vikander appeared at the 6:30 p.m. screening of the period drama A Royal Affair at Roy Thomson Hall.

"I think the audience for Danish cinema is fantastic," Mikkelsen told CityNews special correspondents Colin and Justin.

"It's been strong for a while but getting a real big crowd and the interest from the business is a different thing."

Meanwhile, the premiere of a documentary about Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe took over Roy Thomson Hall.

The gala world premiere of Love, Marilyn drew Amy Greene, a childhood friend of Monroe's, to Toronto.

The film features Lindsay Lohan, Elizabeth Banks, Uma Thurman, Evan Rachel Wood, Glenn Close, Marisa Tomei, Jeremy Piven, and Adrien Brody, who help reveal a very intimate and unseen side of Monroe. The actors read her personal papers, diaries and letters and the writings of the screen legends friends and admirers.
