Katy Perry and Other Celebs that Could Play Marilyn Monroe in a Broadway 'Smash'
Would the Marilyn Monroe musical idea from the NBC series "Smash" make a good Broadway show?
Marilyn is hotter than ever right now, so it wouldn't be surprising to see it happen. And just wrap your mind around this: the Broadway musical could follow a similar storyline as "Smash," meaning it would be a Broadway show about producing a Broadway show about Marilyn Monroe.
That idea might not work out too well, but producer Harvey Weinstein has expressed some interest in bringing Marilyn to Broadway. However, he's hoping to produce a musical based on the movie "My Week with Marilyn," and his top pick to play the blonde bombshell is Katy Perry.
The pop star hasn't exactly proved that she's Marilyn material like "My Week with Marilyn" star Michelle Williams - her acting credits are basically limited to a guest appearance on "How I Met Your Mother" and voicing Smurfette in "The Smurfs." So we figured we'd help Harvey out by throwing out the names of a few more viable actresses that could get in their own "Smash"-style battle for the part:
Dianna Agron
It's easy to imagine Christina Aguilera and Lindsay Lohan fighting over the role, but this "Glee" beauty would actually have a chance at winning it. She can sing and act, and her fresh-faced look can easily be sexed up with a little glitz. However, it's hard to imagine how jealous Rachel Berry would be if Quinn Fabray won the role of Marilyn Monroe in a Broadway play.
Amy Adams
Scarlett Johansson would be an obvious choice since she's buxom and blonde, but what about Amy? ! She coul d belt out tunes with the best of them in the movie "Enchanted," and she did an amazing job bringing her living Disney princess character to life. She managed to be effervescent but also a bit vulnerable, and these personality traits would definitely be important to portray when playing Marilyn. If you think about it, Marilyn was almost like a Disney princess (but with a sexy side).
Katie Holmes
This might seem like an odd choice at first, but Katie actually has Broadway experience from her role in the play "All My Sons." There's also something a little Marilyn-esque about her cherubic cheeks, and she would be a very buzz-worthy choice for the part since she's already played someone close to JFK - she was cast as Jackie O in the TV miniseries "The Kennedys." She also proved that she can be sexy while belting out a tune when she sung "Whatever Lola Wants, Lola Gets" to Tom Cruise at a benefit last year, so she'd probably have no problem pulling off Marilyn's "Happy Birthday, Mr. President" routine. And who knows? Maybe playing a beloved sex symbol would make people see Katy in a warmer light instead of as Tom Cruise's robotic wife or Suri's dowdy mom.
So do you think that there's an actress who could pull off playing Marilyn Monroe, or do you think that a play based on the iconic blonde is a bad idea?
