Marilyn Monroe statue in downtown Palm Springs cleaned of graffiti

PALM SPRINGS Marilyn Monroe got a temporary fashion makeover.

Residents spotted red writing across the skirt of the 26-foot-tall statue of Monroe in downtown Palm Springs.

The marks on her dress were promptly scrubbed off Wednesday after city crews were alerted.

It ended up being a modest and very minor event, but we are working, obviously, to keep it secure and tag free, Assistant City Manager Tom Wilson said.

Police are reviewing surveillance footage to try to spot the graffiti artist.

The statue, which depicts Monroe's famous pose from the 1955 film "The Seven Year Itch," has brought Palm Springs much international attention since its May 14 arrival.

PS Resorts, a consortium of local hotels, raised $100,000 through 37 private donors to beat out groups in Tokyo, Paris and Madrid that were vying for Forever Marilyn.
